My brothers do this... They wash their hair then while it is still wet get about a quarter sized amount of pomade, rub it into the palms of your hands, then rub into the hair all over. Brush it through with a boar bristle brush, brushing outwards from the crown of your head. Put on the du-rag tight. When they take the du-rags off, they wear them all day if they aren't leaving the house, they make sure they have their brush with them to brush the hairs back in place throughout the day. I don't know how long it takes to get the waves, but stick with it and they will show up.

well you have to have curly or nappy hair first or all. when you get your hair cut, you have to get it cut just close enough to cut the curl off but not too short to where your hair is not long enough to wave. usually a number 1 guard will acheive the perfect length, then taper the sides and nape (bottom back of the head.) if you desire, use a pomade. durag and a brush at night is a must, it will help to train your hair.

Apply wave hairdressing to clean hair. Get a small amount apply it to each section, the sides, top, and back and rub all over your hair, in the same direction of your wave.

Do not use Luster Pink Lotion. You need something thicker.

You should have waves in a couple of days, if your brush it correctly and apply enough wave hair dressing to it.
